(Elitist Obnoxious snob alert:) I have too many books. So, after seeing an ad for a community garage sale I decided to buy a table and haul some out, in hopes of not having to haul them back in. Unfortunately
it
quite
quickly
be-
came
apparent
that this
was not
the right demographic for what I had to sell.
The tragedy is, that neither are used bookstore owners…none of them, it seems, these days, are terribly keen on buying or even trading for quality fiction in very good + condition. There really is a crying need for a good online used book exchange/marketplace website where like-minded buyers and sellers can meet freely, to conduct business successfully. Anyone know of such a place?

"Saturday, March 6 at 10am, we'll sell 200+ old books, including very many antique books in excellent condition. All books are being sold for a local North Country family…liquidating a parent's home and family collection, which spans 100+ years. We'll also sell a large collection of old White Mountains, NH postcards, including one lot with approximately 175 unique cards.
Special note: the sale will also include an 1872 autograph book of the 42nd Congress of the U.S., with 70+ signatures including President Ulysses S. Grant, later president James Garfield, and many NH and New England representatives. A printable list of all signatures and titles that we could identify is available at www.amriverauction. We've only posted pictures of a few of the books, but are happy to photograph any for review of condition, by request.
During my recent trip to Vermont I had the pleasure of getting to know Claire Van Vliet, proprietor of The Janus Press. I was much taken with the various books she showed me. One in particular won my heart, largely because it includes a map of Kent, on which Tunbridge Wells appears. My great great grandfather ran a successful construction company based in Tunbridge Wells which built many of the houses in the region during the latter part of the 19th Century, & early part of the 20th. On a whim, I bought ten copies, eight of which I plan to sell. Here’s a bit more information:
"Papermaking at Hayle Mill 1808-1987 is 68 pages with a text by Maureen Green that is both a readable and technical survey of the 180 years the Green family made handmade paper. (Please click on the link at the end of this description to get an idea of the quality of this collectible, private press limited edition publication)
There are five illustrations, fourteen tipped-in paper samples, and seventeen watermarks ranging from those created in the early 1800s to the one that was made for the last paper produced at the mill, Finale, on which this book is printed. The book is bound in Barcham Green Nefertiti paper with longstitch. In addition to the book there is included:
A map showing the twelve water powered mills that were on two and a half miles of the Loose Stream in 1865. The map is printed letterpress on Finale and opens out to three feet wide
A portfolio of twelve Barcham Green papers 7 x10 inches enclosed in an India Office paper wrapper
A portfolio of nineteen historic photographs from 1870 to 1977 of the mill and the processes of handpapermaking together with a diagram of the mill layout in 1978 all enclosed in a De Wint paper wrapper
Except for the photographs and the mill diagram, all the papers used in this project were handmade by Barcham Green and Company at Hayle Mill, Maidstone in Kent, England.
I’ll post again shortly about why this book is valuable to libraries and others with special collections ‘on the book,’ to paper conservators and to ‘books on books’ collectors interested in a good investment.
Feedback:
"I wanted to thank you for your many generous and intelligent words about my new book (and other stuff)...I get great pleasure from reading your blog."
Critic, James Wood, The New Yorker.
"You can find very bad writing and sloppy impressionism in literary blogs, but also incisive, fresh, thoughtful criticism from voices unencumbered by the politics of Grub St". I would put your blog in the latter category, which is why I’m responding here…Congratulations on a very fine blog."
Scholar, Dr. Ronan McDonald.
"You ask the most brilliant, thoughtful questions, it's really a pleasure to do an interview where someone actually wants to talk about writing and literature in general."
Novelist Margot Livesey.
""The happy result of all this (the Salon des Refuses experience) from my own perspective was my discovery of the wonderful "Note Bene," which I added to my "favourites" early in the summer and which I have read --- and listened to --- with great pleasure ever since."
Novelist Jane Urquhart.
"I spent a bit of time last night perusing, as I often do, Nigel Beale's Nota Bene. My suggestion is that you do the same. It is truly a remarkable site."
