Hail the Hedera
In case you were wondering, the gliphs, or images, you see on the main page of Literary Tourist, planted on either side of "Find a Bookstore" are called Hedera’s

which is Latin for ivy. Originally used as punctuation marks, typically in early Greek texts to indicate breaks between long paragraphs, these fleurons are now used by clever designers in efforts to try to conjure up a sophisticated William Morris-like vibe.

Booksellers identify their favorite books
Shelfawareness reports that a few weeks ago, a patron of Micawber’s bookstore in St. Paul, Minn., asked co-owner Hans Weyandt for a list of his top personal favorite books. Weyandt has since contacted booksellers nationwide with the aim of getting other top 50 lists.
Last night, he posted his own on Mr. Micawber Enters the Internets blog and plans to add a new list each weekday. Thus far, he has received 20 lists (a total of 1,000 books) from booksellers in 17 states. "Once I’ve posted all of the lists, I will compile the most frequently mentioned titles. What I told everyone was that I was looking for either a top 50 list or 50 favorite books to handsell. Some booksellers chose to add their own restrictions, such as fiction only, deceased authors only, etc."
Here are some of the booksellers who have agreed to contribute to the project:
Staff lists from Subterranean Books, St. Louis, Mo., and the Harvard Bookstore, Cambridge, Mass.
Neil Strandberg from the Tattered Cover Bookstore, Denver, Colo.
Michael Boggs of Carmichael’s Bookstore, Louisville, Ky.
Libby Cowles of Maria’s Bookshop, Durango, Colo.
Liberty Hardy of RiverRun Bookstore, Portsmouth, N.H.
Jay Peterson of Magers and Quinn, Minneapolis, Minn.
Toby Cox of Three Lives & Co., New York City
Matt Lage of Iowa Book Co., Iowa City, Iowa
Emily Pullen of Skylight Books, Los Angeles, Calif.
Emma Straub of BookCourt, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Paul Yamazaki of City Lights, San Francisco, Calif.
Paul Ingram of Prairie Lights, Iowa City, Iowa
Stacie Michelle Williams of Boswell Book Company, Milwaukee, Wis.
Joseph DeSalvo of Faulkner House Books, New Orleans, La.
J. Peder Zane conducted a similar project with famous authors several years ago (it’s actually ongoing) which resulted in a fun book called The Top Ten: Writers Pick Their Favorite Books.

Bookstores Plan Videos for Banned Books Week
During this year’s Banned Books Week, Sept. 24-Oct. 1 bookstores across North America will create videos of customers reading from their favorite banned books.
Pat Moody of the Hickory Stick Bookshop in Washington Depot, Connecticut, has, for example invited local authors, artists, teachers and town officials to join the read-out in her store. “Everyone I have spoken to is very excited to participate in our Freedom to Read event,” Moody said.
Two kinds of videos will be posted on a special YouTube channel created for the read-out: readings from banned books and eyewitness accounts of book challenges. Shawn Wathen of Chapter One Bookstore in Hamilton, Montana, plans to create videos of people who have opposed book challenges in the local schools.
ABFFE has created a poster that can be downloaded from the ABFFE website and produced a video demonstrating how easy it is to record customers reading from their favorite banned books. Bookstore videos will be uploaded to ABFFE’s YouTube channel. ABFFE will take responsibility for ensuring that they are formatted and posted on the main read-out channel.
Bookstores participating in the Internet read-out include Hickory Stick, Tattered Cover, Chapter One, Alamosa Books, Albuquerque, NM; BookPeople, Austin, TX; Boulevard Books, Brooklyn, NY; Colgate Bookstore, Hamilton, NY; One More Page Books, Arlington, VA; UConn Co-op, Storrs, CT; the University of Oregon Duck Store, Village Books, Bellingham, WA, and Book House, St. Louis, MO.
For more information on how to participate in this event, email Chris Finan president of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE), at chris@abffe.org.
