Binding Governor General’s Literary Award-Winning Books
In addition to the honour, and the money ($25,000), winners of the Governor General’s Literary Awards receive something really special: hand-bound editions of the books they’ve written. Between 1973 (when the tradition started) and 2004 (when he retired), master bookbinder Pierre Ouvrard crafted more than 300 original bindings for the awards. In 2005, Lise Dubois took over. This past Spring the Canada Council put out a call for a new bookbinder, someone who could interpret, embellish and beautify winning books in the style to which they’d become accustomed. Bookbinding description
Traditional full leather binding in savannah buffalo skin. Leather headbands with mosaics. Ink sprinkled edges. Inlays of mosaics made of numerous types of leather, such as lizard, snakeskin, sealskin and ostrich. On both front and back boards, inlays of lizard dots. Endpapers handmade in France by Marie Madec. Triptych box covered with a lizard finish pigskin. Title printed with brown color foil.
