Ian McEwan on Charlie Rose tells us that writing novels requires stamina, that lyric poems can be perfect, novels cannot, though some get close, including: Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, Rabbit is Rich, plus the last ten pages of Joyce’s ‘The Dead’, and Hemingway’s delightful hyper-short story ‘The Cat in the Rain’ (unmissable if you hold even the slightest feeling of affection for cats)
