[Breviarium historiae Romanae.] manuscript in latin, written in humanistic and semi-Gothic book hands by at least 2 scribes, 29-32 lines, brown and black inks, on vellum (leaves 1-10) and laid paper with basilisk watermark (11-end). Initials in blue and red. 55 leaves, complete. 235×165 mm, contemporary vellum, recased, endpapers renewed; some dampstaining and minor marginal worming. Italy, later 15th century Estimate $800-1,200

Day and Copeland and Kimball and Stone and Lane and Lasner

When I asked renowned Bodley Head collector Mark Samuels Lasner (stay tuned for the interview) recently which American publishers he thought most closely matched John Lane’s achievement, he cited Day and Copeland, and Stone and Kimball.

Dropped in on James Gray at James & Devon Gray Booksellers yesterday afternoon. He showed me a copy of a Book of Hours in his possession…breathtaking proof that the clergy of the time shared my view that God can be found in flowers.

Bookstore Tragedy

Portland Oregon: A three-alarm fire engulfs Phil Wikelund’s  Great Northwest Bookstore on Sunday. Calling the tragedy "a big loss to the bookselling community," Debbie Cross, who owns Wrigley-Cross Books and is president of the Portland Area Used Booksellers Association said  "We’re losing so many used bookstores anyway to the Internet and the general economy, and to see any store closed hurts."
