Poetry as Vocabulary; and a Sound Clipped Glossary
This from R.P. Blackmur:
" Poetry is to be regarded as the use of one vocabulary of the language. I have heard a medical man high in his profession assert that all medicine lay in an up-to-date medical dictionary; by which he meant that if he knew his vocabulary he could objectify his knowledge. It is the same thing with poetry, and with as much responsibility for life and death"
This is similar to the idea that if you can put a name to something, you’re better able to understand it. The bigger your vocabulary, the more profoundly you live your life, because you can explain more things better to yourself.
And this via Conversational Reading : To coincide with the paperback release of The Rest Is Noise, Ross has made it possible for any of us to quickly grasp exactly what is meant by the musical terms he uses. He’s put together an online glossary with definitions and sound clips to explain virtually all the terminology found in the book.
