Show us your workspace…

Budd Parr has set up a flickr site for all things bookish. He has invited metaxucafe members to post photos of their work spaces. Fun idea. The Guardian did something like this for authors last year…check that…by sheer coincidence after visiting maitresse’s lovely salon, I note that it’s still up there…interesting to see how the amount of crap varies from desk to desk…

I just put before and after shots on flickr and also posted an image with more detailed explanations on The Story’s Story. Although I’m not freakishly organized like the 43 Folders people, whose methods seem appropriate to those striving to take over the world, my desk is reasonably neat in part because I think Paul Graham has a point in this essay

And unless you’re extremely organized, a house full of stuff can be very depressing. A cluttered room saps one’s spirits. One reason, obviously, is that there’s less room for people in a room full of stuff. But there’s more going on than that. I think humans constantly scan their environment to build a mental model of what’s around them. And the harder a scene is to parse, the less energy you have left for conscious thoughts. A cluttered room is literally exhausting.

Things—usually books, but sometimes kipple—have a way of accumulating despite my best effort, however, so the new picture is still somewhat unusual for its cleanliness.
