Shakespeare’s Hamlet: Acts 1 & 2: Audio discussion between Prof. Joseph Khoury and Nigel Beale.
Over the past decade Joseph Khoury and I, along with a varying cast of friends, have gotten together on a regular basis to discuss Shakespeare. Roughly once a month I’d set aside an afternoon, trot down to Chapters bookstore, order up a grande latte, park myself in what were once soft covered chairs, and read the designated plays in one sitting. Typically this took three hours. About the same length of time it takes to perform the work on stage. I’d then dine, and meet the group at the allotted watering hole to discuss.
These were rich days indeed. Nothing matches Shakespeare for pure concentrated complexity. Thinking and talking on him does ones synapses incomparable good, I think.
A couple of years ago Joe assumed a position as English Professor at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada, so our Shakespearean soirees came to an end. Last week however he was in town. Here’s the blow by blow of our Hamlet conversation:
